In North Dakota, over 50,000 adults have type 2 diabetes, and an additional 200,000 have prediabetes.

What is type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is a condition that causes high blood sugar in the body. If not treated, type 2 diabetes can hurt your eyes, kidneys, and heart. 

Who is at risk of developing type 2 diabetes?
  •  People with prediabetes 
  • People over the age of 45
  • People who are overweight or obese
  • People who aren't physically active
  • People who are African American, Hispanic or Latino-American, American Indian, or Alaska Native

Can type 2 diabetes be prevented?
There are several things you can do that may lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes!
  • Get tested for prediabetes
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are overweight, work with your doctor to create a weight loss plan
  • Get more exercise
  • Eat healthy, and eat less sugary, processed food

How do I know if I have type 2 diabetes?
​See your doctor. They will perform the right tests, and help you develop a treatment plan.

What is prediabetes?
​Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes. If you have prediabetes, you may be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Why is it important to find out if I have prediabetes?
If you find out you have prediabetes, then you can make lifestyle changes to lower your blood sugar and reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

​How do I know if I have prediabetes?
Take the quiz! If you suspect you might have prediabets, call your doctor. They will perform a blood test to determine your blood sugar levels.

What happens if I have prediabetes?
If you are diagnosed with prediabetes, it is important to make lifestyle changes to avoid developing type 2 diabetes. Eating healthier, exercising more, and losing weight can help. Your doctor will help you develop a plan!
